Leaking Tanks

Leaking Tanks Tanks are usually constructed of either glass fibre, modern composite or in the case of the older property bricks and mortar. Unless someone has dropped a heavy object directly into the tank or the surrounding ground moves, modern tanks should last many decades. However, in the case of brick built tanks they will leak during their lifetime. They need maintenance in the same way as your house will need re-rendering at some stage.

Did you know? Unscrupulous builders used to build brick tanks with a glass bottle in the side wall! They did this so the tank was water tight when inspected by the local inspector for a fit-for-purpose certificate, but once gained broke the bottle so the tank would never need to be emptied!

A leaking tank is illegal; it has two effects. It allows waste to contaminate the surrounding land, giving rise to odour problems, soft ground and potential contamination of nearby water courses. Secondly, a leaking tank flows in two directions; after emptying it will back fill with ground water if the water table is high in the area or after heavy rain fall. It is not uncommon for a tank to completely refill after only two hours of emptying in these conditions!
